Celebrating resilience, hope and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of displacement and loss.

Kesho Amahoro is a powerful musical theatre production based on true stories from the Rwandan refugee camps in Northern Tanzania following the 1994 genocide. Written by Lizzie Jago with music by Anna Rusbatch, the production celebrates resilience, hope and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of displacement and loss.

Since its premiere in Nairobi in 2010, the musical has grown into a significant youth theatre production, performed by large ensembles of young performers in both Kenya and the United Kingdom. In 2022, the production was reimagined by Youth Theatre Kenya, later winning Best Children’s Play at the Kenya Theatre Awards.

Blending emotionally driven storytelling with original music and ensemble performance, Kesho Amahoro creates an immersive theatrical experience that explores themes of survival, compassion, identity, and community. In 2026, it was beautifully performed by Kivukoni School Key Stage 3 students, further continuing its legacy as a meaningful piece of socially conscious theatre that empowers young performers while preserving stories of resilience and humanity.
